TWN Update on Sustainable Development Conference 2012 (Dec12/01)
17 December 2012
Third World Network

A new article, "The Post-2015 Development Framework and the Realization of Women's Rights and Social Justice," is co-authored by Radhika Balakrishnan and Diane Elson and published by the Center for Women's Global Leadership. It offers reflections on the post-2015 development framework, based on the authors views of the strengths and weaknesses of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) development framework; key changes since 2000; and ideas on how to address the challenges of the ongoing discussions and proposals around the post-2015 development framework.

The MDGs, which were derived from the more comprehensive Millennium Declaration, established a timeframe ending in 2015 for the achievement of the goals and targets laid out. As the deadline quickly approaches, processes are underway to rethink the post-2015 agenda. This rethinking needs to be done in the context of the Millennium Declaration, while extending the framework outlined in the Declaration in relevant ways to recognize that the world has changed significantly economically and geopolitically since the 1990s.
